THE NICOL AND WRIGHT FAMILIES OF SCOTLAND
There follows a transcript of a book owned by James Maitland, who descends from the Nicol and Wright families. Included in the book were some letters and a tree of the Wright & Innes families. The letters are reproduced at the end of this transcript. The book given to Dorothy Mayhew by her uncle, Charles Frank Wright, who probably prepared the Wright Tree: the Nicol family book was written by a 2nd cousin of her husband's (Francis James Maitland) mother. The Nicol and Wright families also join earlier by an earlier marriage.

PREFACE.
In presenting this Genealogy to the descendants of the Kincardineshire Branch of the Nicol family, I have to thank many members for their kind help in correcting the printed draft lately circulated.
My thanks are specially due to the Rev. James Smith, B.D., of St. George's-in-the-West Parish, Aberdeen, for his diligent searchings of old Registers in Edinburgh, etc., and for his most kind and ungrudging help.
With regard to the more ancient history I have been assisted by Skene's book, "The Highlanders of Scotland," published in 1837. This publication was awarded the prize offered by the Highland Society of London for the best History of the Highland Clans. Much of Skene's information was derived from MSS. the property of the Faculty of Advocates, Edinburgh, and in particular the MS. believed to have been written in 1450, and which has the date upon it-1467.
As errors may have crept in, I should be greatly obliged by their being pointed out to me. Should any new matters of interest in connection with the family be discovered, it is probable that a further addition of this Genealogy will be printed.

The Nicol family are undoubtedly descendants of the Macnical or Macnincail Clan, who were descended from the ancient Gaelic tribe (the Northern Picts), the earliest inhabitants of the district of Ness, on the north-west coast of Scotland, off the Minch.
Skene, in his "Table of the Descent of the Highland Clans," shows the Macnical Clan as one of the eighteen great clans. They were under the Maormorship or Earldom of Ness, Macnicol being Chief of the Clan. From Skene's account of the Macleod and Macnical Clans, it appears that on the death of the last Macnicol chief, his daughter and heiress married Torquil Macleod, a younger son of the Chief Macleod of Glenelg or Harris. By this marriage the Macleods acquired possession of Edderachylis, Duirnes, Assint, and Coygash, the lands previously owned by the Macnicols.
There is little doubt that after the death of the Chief, the Macnicals lost adhesion, and ceased to exist as a clan.
The Nicols to which this Genealogy refers came from the County of Sutherland. After frequent and severe fights. with the Macintoshes, they, with others of the clan, moved southwards about 1600, many settling in Aberdeenshire and Kincardineshire, others going as far south as Glasgow.

Bringieshill and Overseer on the Arbuthnott Estate. About 1783 he
became tenant of the farm of Fawsyde, parish of Kinneff. In 1802
he built for himself a cottage in Upper Catterline, which was

Wm. Nicol, M.A., M.D., Aberdeen, a Surgeon R.N., from which he
retired 1792, and settled in Stonehaven as a medical practitioner.
There is no record of the date of his entering the Navy, but he
served on the Mediterranean Station on the Flagship "Leander" from
June, 1789, to March, 1792. He was buried in Fetteresso Kirkyard.

From a memorandum book kept by Dr. Wm Nicol from 1 Jan., 1802
to 30 June, 1804, now in the possession of Sir Dyce Duckworth,
some insight is got into his habits and character. He was
evidently a very sociable, hospitable person, dining and supping
out very frequently, whether accompanied by his wife or not is not
recorded. An entry often appears: "Had company to dinner." He was
fond of a game of cards his losses or gains, varying from 6d. to
3s., are entered; in 2 1/2 years he was a loser of 6s. 3d. He took
much interest in county business, attending County and District
Road Meetings, Excise and Small Debts Courts ; he was a
Commissioner of Income and Property Tax, a Captain of Volunteers
from 30 May, 1797 to 1 May, 1802, when the Volunteers were dis-
charged, by order of the Lord-Lieutenant. Later he was a Captain
in the Militia. Some curious entries which this memorandum book
contains will be found in the Appendix.

He was educated in Aberdeen and Glasgow; entered the firm of Wm.
Nicol & Co., of Bombay, at the age of 16, became a partner
in 1826, left Bombay 1838, retired from Wm. Nicol & Co. 31 July,
1844 (the remaining partners being Jas. Wright, Alex. Hadden and
John Smith).
In 1850 he added Ballogie and Balnacraig, Aberdeenshire, to
his paternal estates of Badentoy, etc.; in 1859 he purchased
Newtonhill and Gillybrands, Kincardineshire, and Cairnrobin
adjoining Badentoy, and in 1863 Midstrath adjoining Ballogie.

He represented his native county in Parliament July, 1865, to
Nov., 1872 ; was J.P and D.L. Cos. Kincardine and Aberdeen. He
and his wife are buried in the Kirkyard of Birse.

his devoted father and mother.

He was educated in Aberdeen. In 1810 he went to Bombay on
board the E. I. Co.'s Ship Carmarthen as surgeon. Settled in
Bombay 1820. Founded the firm of Wm, Nicol & Co., in Bombay, in
1820. Left Bombay in 1828. Retired from Wm. N. & Co. 31 July,
1839. Was M.P. for Dover 1859 to 1865. J.P. and D.L, for
Kincardineshire,

He was Director of several Companies, amongst others the
London and County Bank from Feb., 1566, to Nov., 1878, and was
instrumental in raising it to its present high position.
In 1841 his mother-in-law wrote of him: " He is truly amiable and worthy of much respect; he may well be termed the
Peacemaker."
These words equally applied to him in later life-he was the
dearest old man. Heavy troubles came upon him in his old age,
through no fault of his own. He never complained or said a harsh
word about anyone.
He was buried in Brompton Cemetery, and his wife was buried
in her mother's grave in St. Andrew's Scottish Church, Rodney
Street, Liverpool.
They left no issue.

You marriage therefore was a re-cementing of a connection between
the families of Nicol and Wright.
If you will look at page 9 of the book you will see that the
connection is set out.

As you were so interested in the Nicol family tree which I
sent you the other day, I now send you a table showing the
descendants of John Wright, the elder, your great-great
grandfather. He was a native of Erith in Stirlingshire from whence
he migrated to Glasgow where he followed for many years the
business of a schoolmaster. His son John Wright the younger was in
business in Glasgow in connection with two well known men in their
day, David Dale and Robert Owen (known as the socialist) in the
works called New Lanark Hills.
His son James, your grand-father, went to India and was a partner
in the firm of Wm Nicol & Co, Bombay for many years. The rest of
the family history you probably known.
Robert Owen was a man of sufficient importance to have his picture
in the National Portrait Gallery. He was a life long friend of
John Wright's. I recently presented a letter from him to J.W. to
the Gallery which the Managers were glad to have.

As you were so interested in the family tree which I sent you the
other day, I have now copied out for you the descent from your
great-grandmother Margaret Innes, afterwards Wright.
I know her pedigree back as far as her great-grandfather Robert
Innes, the elder, who was therefore your great-great-great
grandfather.
I daresay some day I shall find out the date of John Wright the
elder's father's birth & death but unfortunately there is a gap in
the Parish Registers at Erith covering the period before 1731 and
including that year which was when J.W. the elder was born.

NEW INFORMATION:
Ref: Jane Fordyce Nicol. (1795-1841) married John Fleming,
Williamina Nicol Fleming married James Buchanan Mirrlees, who
married, 2nd, Helen Eliza Gumprecht, brother of John Gumprecht,
who married Marion Cullen, who descended from James Cullen, from
whom also descended Leslie Wilkie. The Mirrlees name remains as a
manufacturer of marine engines.
also had a ship named after him The 'James Nicol Fleming', 993
tons, made nine voyages from Glasgow to Dunedin, Otago, NZ and
three from London to Dunedin and the average outward passages was
86 1/2 days between the years 1869-1881. In 1873 she ran out to Dunedin from Glasgow in 71 days, anchorage to anchorage, or 69 1/2
days land to land. This places her third on the list for the
record passage to Dunedin, the Westland coming first, and the
Scimitar (Rangatiki) second. She was a composite clipper ship, top
strake and bulwarks were iron, wooden bottom with pure copper
sheathing, built in 1869 by Duncan of Glasgow for Patrick
Henderson's Albion Shipping Company and was a sister ship to the
'Otago'. In 1879 she was renamed the 'Napier'. The change came
because Fleming was a director of the City of Glasgow Bank which
failed in September 1879. He was imprisoned for a year and
retired to Campbelltown. The 'Margaret Galbraith' was possibly
named after his wife's maiden name.

Pity no-one has followed up from that book, but then I have done
nothing either. My connection is via p29 where William Paterson
marries Rivers Staines, William is the son of Robert Paterson and
Margaret Fleming (she is the Nicol descendent). He was a tea
planter in Ceylon prior to coming to Australia. His brother James
(I think that was the name, would have to check up) also came to
Australia. Colin Mitchell next page over was a lawyer in
Edinburgh. We saw him when on sabbatical leave in 1980. he is
dead now.
William's son Allan macgregor Mitchell Paterson was my father. He
Married twice, no issue from the first marriage to Anne Ferguson.
I have a brother William Dyce Paterson, commonly known as Dyce. He
has three boys and a girl and 4.5 Paterson grandsons.
Rivers Staines we learnt a year or so ago was the daughter of a
convict and a German woman. The amount of information that is
available about a person if they are a convict is fascinating. He
was a blacksmith who was shoeing a horse stolen by a friend. he
didn't run away! So by being an accessory he was sent to
Australia. Didn't find life too bad because 2 years later his
brother Samuel came out to join him and work with him. He ended up
also running a big inn before drowning the day his youngest
daughter was born - hence the first name!

The ALCo was financed mainly by my great grandfather's first
cousin, James Stevenson of Hailie, Largs. The Moir brothers were
its first managers and Frederick Lewis Maitland Moir's father-in-
law, Gilbert Beith, was a partner with James Stevenson and his
cousin William Stevenson in Beith Stevenson & Co of Manchester.
Fred Moir's daughter Dorothy Caroline married my father's first
cousin, Duncan Campbell Macgregor in 1915. Duncan's mother Amy
(nee Stevenson) was one of my grandfather's 7 sisters. As if all
this wasn't enough, I now find from your website that Amy's
husband was a first cousin of Mrs Fred Moir, their Fleming mothers
being sisters. I see that another Fleming sister married an
Alexander Mitchell. Do you know if this was the same Alexander M
who was of the timber brokers, Edmiston & Mitchell, and was
another director of the African Lakes Co? I must have another
really good look at your website.

James Nicol Fleming:
From New Zealand shipping records, (10/2003) the clipper James
Nicol Fleming sailed to NZ with emigrants in the 1880's and was
described as:
Built 1869 by Duncan of Glasgow for Patrich Henderson's Albion
Shipping Co and sister of the Otago. She was the 4th fastest to
NZ. Fleming was a director of the City of Glasgow Bank which
failed in September 1879, when he was imprisoned for 1 year for
fraud and retired to Campbelltown. The ship was renamed the
Napier.
