History of the Clan in Victoria

The Victorian Branch of the Clan MacNicol was established in 1990 at the request of the late Chief Iain Nicolson. The inaugural meeting was held over a BBQ lunch and John Nicol from the NSW Branch forwarded the names of 3 Victorian Members who transferred to become founding members in Victoria. The NSW Branch also made a financial contribution to enable the establishment of a financial entity prior to seeking incorporation.

Shortly after the formation of Clan Victoria, the Honourable Alastair Nicholson AO RFD QC, then the Chief Justice of the Family Court of Australia, was approached to be our Patron. Fortunately he accepted the role and in addition to providing his name as Patron has remained an active member participating in committee meetings and functions.

The first function of the newly formed group was to attend the Ringwood Highland Games April 1990 and the Clan has continued to have a presence at the games annually since then. In November 1990 a state gathering was held at Albert Park and was attended by over 200 “MacNicol’s”. Within 10 years the group was requested by the Chief to organize the World Gathering in Victoria and I was made a Counsellor to the Chief.

Over the 20 years with the clan I have met many interesting people, it has taken me into so many walks of life and I have learned so much of my fore fathers and their way of life. I have been lucky enough to be able to find relations in Scotland and visit Skye to walk around the area where my grandfather and his forebears were born and lived under such primitive conditions.   All this has only been made possible by becoming a member of Clan MacNicol in 1981.
